Kansas State Fair 2015

The last time we went to the Kansas State Fair was 2009.

The boys had a day off school, so I took the day off and we headed to Hutchinson, KS.

It was one of those Kansas days that has two seasons in one: summer and winter.

It started out really hot. Tank top and sweating in the sun. All of sudden, the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up and it was 65 degrees and I'm shivering on the Ferris Wheel.

We watched a chain saw sculptor. I mean,  who doesn't like creating art with a chain saw? He started out with a tree trunk and ended up with this:

Did the zip line. Getting ready...

Rode the big slide.

Rode the Ferris Wheel. View from the top:

Saw the butter sculpture (a must-see):

Looked at all the winning produce, including 1000 pound pumpkin.

Watched Pogo Fred. A trickster on a pogo stick.

Found the Queen Bee. OK, someone had to show us where she was, but still.

Walked seven miles (or 16,000+ steps).

Rode the Skyride. The boys took a selfie because we couldn't all ride together.

Zach and his turkey leg.

Got up close and personal with cows.

Looked at the rabbits. Heard clucking chickens, but found it was just a recording over some speakers!

We played Carnival games and won Grumpy Gary to keep Tuxedo Sam company (Adam won Tuxedo Sam at Worlds of Fun this summer). Grumpy Gary is the purple fish, Tuxedo Sam is the penguin wearing a top hat.

Tried the grilled macaroni and cheese sandwich.

Visited the Slushy Factory again (just like six years ago).

Here's what we spent:
$24 entrance fee ($10 for adults, $4 for kids 12 and under)
$4 ride the big slide (2 rides)
$12 Skyride (for three people)
$20 zip line (for two kids)
$15 Ferris Wheel (for three people)
$11 turkey leg + bottle of water (for Zach)
$12 cheeseburger + fries (for me and Adam, then Adam ate the rest of Zach's turkey leg)
$12 ice cream (2 cones and a root beer float)
$10 slushies (for two)
$5 mac n cheese grilled sandwich (we all shared it)
$15 carnival games (at least we won Grumpy Gary)

Before we left I grabbed a bunch of cash. I ran out. It's good that Scott wasn't with us.

We watched the pig races. We were pig race newbies. The pigs had names like Donald Rump, Jean Claude Van Ham, Swillery Clinton.

When we left, Adam wanted to ride the tractor out to the parking lot, even though it would take more time. "For the experience," he said. We ended up going WAY out of the way, and ended right back where we started. We walked to the car instead.

Thirteen

There's an official teenager in the house.

Lucky thirteen!

He wanted to try footgolf...which is golf with a soccer ball. For real. You play on a golf course, with "regular" golfers. You start at the footgolf tees (which are different from the regular golf tees), and kick your ball. Each hole has a par, and the goal is to get your ball into the bigger hole with a flag (different from where the golfers are...)

Here...this video might help:

We ended up losing one ball in the creek (a different time then what was shown in the video). It wasn't that big of deal, because, you know, we have plenty of soccer balls.

If you are keeping track, people in our house can now play golf, disc golf and footgolf. (And yes, disc golf is two words, and footgolf is one word).

Ali by the Year

This is a guest post by 11 year-old Zach

This is our first full year we've had with Ali. In the time that we've had her, she has been the funniest {and only} dog we have ever had. Whenever she eats, she gets SUPER excited and gobbles up her food in less than 30 seconds.

We had her DNA tested and had to rub this stick thing in her mouth and spin it around. When we got it back, we found out that she is 50% Beagle and Lhasa Apso/American Eskimo mix. Out of her four grandparents, two were beagles, one was a Lhasa Apso, and one was an American Eskimo. In other words, one of her parents was a beagle and the other was a cross between a Lhasa Apso and an American Eskimo.

She still barks at other dogs, but she has made one friend. Her friend is a chocolate lab named Gage and whenever we stop by his house, Ali whines. There is another dog that lives there, but its a yip yip dog and barks at Ali.

We think she knows when we are about to leave the house, because she scoots under one of our beds and goes right in the middle, where we can't get her. One of the only ways we can get her out is by putting food into her bowl.

When it's time for bed, she sleeps under the covers, right in the middle of the bed so that we have to push her out of the way. She's always ready to get up right when we get up.

When she takes a bath, she has that "get-me-out-of-here" look in her eyes. She tolerates it, though. After, she tears around the house, shaking herself off and rolling on the carpet.
